Neu!

Writers: Klaus Dinger, Michael Rother

NEU! is a seminal German krautrock band formed in Düsseldorf in 1971 by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, both former members of Kraftwerk. Known for their innovative approach to their music, NEU! has been highly influential in the development of electronic and experimental rock genres.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 1972, introduced the world to their minimalist soundscapes and "motorik" beat—a steady, propulsive 4/4 rhythm that became a hallmark of their style.

Following their debut, NEU! released NEU! 2 in 1973. The album is notable for its use of tape manipulation and innovative production techniques, particularly on tracks like "Für Immer" and the various speed-altered versions of their single "Super."

In 1975, the band released NEU! '75, which showed a development in their sound with the introduction of more punk and proto-punk elements. The album features the contrast between Rother's melodic, ambient influences and Dinger's more abrasive, rock-oriented approach, particularly on tracks like "Isi" and "Hero."

NEU! disbanded in the mid-1970s, but their work continued to gain recognition. In the 1990s and 2000s, their albums were reissued, introducing their music to new generations of listeners.
